  • To provide medical doctors with moral, scientific and professional training.
  • To promote medical-moral studies on the basis of the principles of Catholic doctrine and in a way that faithfully respects the Magisterium of the Church.
  • To foster and defend the spirit of authentic human and Christian service of medical doctors in their relationship with their patients.
  • To secure the most dignified practice of the profession and the defence of the proper interests of the medical classes.
  • To educate members in correct responsibility regarding the principles of the Church as well as the practice of effective charitable activity in the exercise of the medical profession.
  • To promote evangelisation in the health care world so as to create an authentic community, together with the sick and other health care workers, that bears witness to the Christian values of life.
  • To develop ties and co-operation with other Catholic health-care associations and institutions, engaging as well in initiatives directed towards the integration and proper appreciation of groups of voluntary workers.
Those who have degrees in medicine and surgery, in dentistry and in other connected disciplines can be members of the AMCI (article 7 of the statutes). Students in the final two-year part of their relevant degree courses can be associate members. People who have acquired special merit in the field of medicine and related sciences by serving the Church, society and the Association can be honorary members. Individuals, organisations, associations and foundations that freely contribute to the achievement of the aims of the AMCI, by ways agreed with the national presidency of the Association, can be supporting members.

The AMCI believes that its founding characteristic is its loyalty to the Magisterium of the Church, its readiness to co-operate at a parish and diocesan level. The AMCI engages in co-operation to achieve its institutional aims with the scientific and professional organisations that belong to the European Federation (FEAMC) and the International Federation (FIAMC) of Catholic doctors.
The AMCI is especially concerned with the training of medical doctors through the promotion of studies, meetings, and research directed towards the 'humanisation' of medicine, and with the promotion of a spirit of service based upon the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.
.The AMCI actively works with the National Council of Lay Organisations and belongs to the National Council for Pastoral Care in Health of the Italian Bishops' Conference. Together with the Movement for Life, it established a Forum for associations and movements of Christian inspiration active in the social-health care field (the President of this Forum is the President of the AMCI). The Association also belongs to various regional and local bioethical committees. Together with other Catholic bodies it founded the SIBCE (the Italian Society of Bioethics and Ethical Committees).
It actively works with the Centres to Help Life, with therapeutic communities, and with the various branches of Caritas at a diocesan level. In addition, the national leaders of the AMCI very closely follow the introduction and enactment of laws of great ethical relevance, and to this end also take part in hearings of the Committees for Social Affairs of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.
